(Continued from the previous page)…There has been no [precedent of clan members assuming shrine official positions]. This is the established custom (社例) of the shrine.
Item: Those who serve as shrine officials (社司) have, since ancient times, been permitted to ascend into the inner sanctuary (昇殿, shōden). Those who are merely clan members (ujibito), however, have never been granted the privilege of ascending into the inner sanctuary. The same holds true under the laws of the shrine (社法).
Item: There is no precedent of clan members (ujibito) becoming shrine officials (社司). However, if such an order were now issued, all clan members would effectively become families of shrine officials (社官家). Should that occur, the distinction between shrine officials and clan members would be entirely lost, and the laws of the shrine would be thrown into complete disorder.
Item: Regarding the shortfall in the number of negi (祢宜, senior priests) and hafuri (祝, ritual priests), each year a lottery is held among the clan members, the full group of those selected being designated "daikan" (代官, deputies), with five persons serving as proxies (名代) at a time.
Item: Those referred to as "shrine officials" (社官) are persons who, from New Year's Day throughout the year during all sacred ceremonies, perform various ritual procedures within the inner sanctuary (内陣; note in original: "本ノマヽ," possibly "shinjin" or "jin") and elsewhere.
Item: Those referred to as "clan members" (ujibito) are persons who, from New Year's Day during all sacred ceremonies, are responsible for preparing and maintaining the shrine hall and its furnishings (神宮以下), and for various duties related thereto.
Item: Those referred to as "clan members" (ujibito) serve as "ienoko" (家子, household retainers) attached to the head priests and shrine officials. Each year, fourteen persons are selected by lottery from among all the clan members (惣氏人) to become "shrine administration household retainers" (社務家子).
Item: The clan member designated "shoshi" (所司) is an official whose role is to serve as a guide for each respective section when shrine officials proceed to the shrine precincts during sacred ceremonies.
Item: The clan member designated "mokudai" (目代) is a person whose duty is to light fires in the garden/outer precincts (庭上) when shrine officials present sacred offerings (神供) within the inner and outer sanctuaries.
