人惣代之者数年公家ニ而御僉議之
趣段々申上系図等入御覧候処氏人社職

氏人の惣代たちが数年にわたって公家において審議された経緯を詳しく申し上げ、系図などをご覧いただいたところ、氏人が社職を申請することは旧記に明確に記されているとのご裁定を賜りました。しかし、右の反対派の者たちが申し上げるには、このように次々と社職に就き、順次転任していくならば、これまで社職を担ってきた家々の子孫たちが、また次にいつ順番が回ってきて社司になれるかも見通しが立たず、迷惑至極であるから、四家の者たちを(社職として)存続させるよう願いたいとのことを嘆願申し上げました。それを聞し召され、それならば向後(以後)定める家を置き、右の者たちは本社神主から貴布祢社の祝(はふり)までの社職を勤めるように命じるべきとのことになりました。そこでまた氏人たちが嘆願申し上げるには、賀茂氏は系図が一本で一姓一列であり、その器量に応じて社職に任ぜられ、順次転任するのが社の慣例(社法)でございます。このたび新たに家を定め置かれますと、その他の氏人たちは順次転任することができなくなり、迷惑この上ない次第でございますと申し上げたところ、その——

The representatives of the ujibito (clan members) reported in detail on the proceedings of the deliberations that had taken place over several years at the court (kuge), and after the genealogical records were reviewed, it was ruled that the ujibito's petition for shrine positions (shashoku) was clearly supported by the old records. However, those in opposition argued that if clan members were to take up shrine positions one after another in this manner and be transferred in succession, the descendants of the families that had previously held shrine positions would have no way of knowing when their turn would come around again to become shrine officials (shashi), causing them great hardship. They therefore petitioned that the four families be allowed to continue (in their positions). Upon hearing this, it was determined that henceforth certain families would be designated, and that these individuals would be ordered to serve in shrine positions ranging from the head priest (kannushi) of the main shrine down to the celebrant priest (hafuri) of the Kibune Shrine. In response, the ujibito once again petitioned, stating that the Kamo clan shares a single lineage and is of one surname and one unified line, and it has been the established custom (shahou) of the shrine that members be appointed to shrine positions according to their individual abilities and transferred in succession.
