(Continued from previous page) Over 90 koku was received in grant, from which expenses for divine ceremonies and festivals are drawn, and additionally the guardianship of the Sakuramon (Cherry Blossom Gate) within the shrine precincts is performed. As the actual yield amounts to only over 9 koku, the claim that there are 90 koku is yet another falsehood. One matter: It has been claimed that this shrine's ceremonial laws and precedents are being observed. Although the collective shrine families (sōshake) are of modest means, they devote themselves fully to observing the customs of temples and shrines, and as prayers for the peace of the realm, five leaders of great ascetic practice (daigyō no shōjin-gashira) are appointed each year to undergo ritual purification (kessai). They make daily pilgrimages to this shrine, visit the Kibune Shrine on every Day of the Ox, and visit the Ujigami Shrine on every Day of the Monkey, performing prayers for both the court and military authorities without a single day's neglect. Furthermore, they conduct monthly purification rites (harae no kōshiki), as well as perform Shinto initiation rites (Shintō kanjō), and carry out fire ritual ceremonies (goma gyōji) and other such practices. Moreover, when ujibito (shrine community members), negi (priests), and hafuri (lower-ranking priests) are employed, they are referred to as "shashi" (shrine officials); and when negi and hafuri are not retained, they are called "ujibito." It is perfectly clear that they wear formal court dress (ikan sokutai) and duly fulfill their shrine duties at religious ceremonies. Despite this, to claim that the shrine's laws are in disorder is yet another falsehood. One matter: The 140 ujibito (shrine community members) are, in accordance with successive generations of vermilion-seal documents (goshuin), subject to the direction and administration of Kamo Shrine. For this reason, each year they present the ceremonial hollyhock (aoi) for the festival to the Kubō-sama (the Shogun), and pay their formal respects. In all matters pertaining to Kamo, as a community of 140 shrine families — (continues on the following page)
