Since ancient times, when scholars have studied natural products, they have generally based their work on materia medica (honzō), thoroughly investigating mountain and sea products without omission. The talents of scholars such as Li Shizhen with his "Compendium of Materia Medica" (Bencao Gangmu), Matsushita Kenrin's works, and Kaibara Ekiken were truly inexhaustible.
