一、鞠棹（まりざお）の私的な事について。軒の向かい、やや左の方に並べる作法であろうか。慈照院殿様（義政公）の御代、花の御所の御懸（おかかり）は西面の御座であった。御殿に差し向かいにして、屏風・中門の内にあり、この内側の懸（かかり）の軒よりは、向かいの柳（南の方）より西の壁柱に〔地より〕……

刀は柄（つか）の方を軒の方へ向けて置き、左の膝をついて、形（かた）を正面に向けて回るものである。後ろを軒に向けてはならない。軒の左側となる。

Item: Concerning the private matter of the *marizao* (鞠棹, the kemari pole/staff). It appears to be the custom to arrange it slightly to the left, facing the eaves (*noki*). During the reign of Lord Jishō-in (Ashikaga Yoshimasa), the *okakari* (designated ceremonial area) of the *Hana no Gosho* (Flower Palace) was positioned on the west-facing side. Facing directly toward the main hall, situated within the folding screen (*byōbu*) and the middle gate (*chūmon*), from the eaves of the inner *kakari*, to the western wall pillar from the direction of the southern willow tree facing it — [from the ground]…

The sword (*katana*) is to be placed with the hilt (*tsuka*) directed toward the eaves, with the left knee lowered to the ground, turning the body (*kata*) to face the front. One must not turn one's back toward the eaves. This is the left side of the eaves.

This is the right side of the eaves. One places the right knee down, turns to the left, with the back facing toward the eaves… One must not turn [the back] in that manner.
