In Kanpō 3 {{year of the water boar}}, due to heavy rain and flooding, it was conducted thus. This was the year of Yoshiuji's first appointment.
1. On the night of the fourth day {{at the hour of the ox}} proceeding to the whip ceremony {{however, go directly in evening attire without purification bathing. At this time, do not forget to bring the iris of the tutelary deity}}
From the retreat quarters, pass through the front of Nara Shrine and enter the third torii. The iris of the tutelary deity should be placed on the embankment behind Nara Shrine, with each person remembering where they placed it. Next, pass through the stone bridge, second torii, and Negi bridge to Tama bridge and bow once at Katsuoka Shrine. Next, pass through the connecting hall to the purification basin under the maple tree below Kawao Shrine {{unwrap the tip of the whip}}
{{One theory says to sprinkle water without unwrapping}} Facing the river water, purify the whip with water from the sacred abstinence river - there is an oral tradition {{the oral tradition refers to what is recorded below. This must be kept secret}}
Even when meeting people, hide the whip so it cannot be seen {{oral tradition {{and so forth}}}}
Privately recited: At Kataoka's ridge, with sincere intention and no worthless thoughts, using the three types of purification, cleanse and purify body and mind through contemplation {{This is oral tradition. Must be kept most secret}}
This is called whip blessing (muchi kaji), as seen in certain records {{When unwrapping, after purification, wrap the whip tip again as before}}
Next, pass through the tower gate and middle gate, enter the side door, and proceed from the corridor to the front of the main shrine {{although it says in pairs}}
[Left page]
{{Sometimes one person, sometimes two or three people proceed together}} Bow once at the earthen platform. Next, ascend the stairs and bow once on the great floor. Next, place the whip {{left side for the Negi priest, right side for the Hafuri priest}} on the offering table {{one theory says to lean it against the sacred door, another says to place it without leaning}}. Bow once, descend the stairs, bow twice at the earthen platform and finish reciting the ritual prayer, then bow twice {{with hidden hands}}. Next, ascend the stairs, take the whip on the great floor and bow once, descend the stairs, bow once at the earthen platform and finish withdrawing. Next, proceed to the auxiliary hall, withdraw same as the main shrine. Next, as initially, pass through the middle gate, tower gate, and connecting hall to proceed to Katsuoka Shrine, same as the main shrine. Next, pass through Sunoko bridge {{referring to Negi bridge}}, second torii, stone bridge, and third torii to exit {{at this time, take the iris of the tutelary deity that was placed earlier and go to the bathhouse}}. Go directly to the bathhouse for purification bathing and shrine visit
For the whip ceremony, only the above three shrines are visited {{However, for the whip ceremony, participate without letting others know - this is the oral tradition of the elders {{and so forth}}. Therefore, whether after retreat or during shrine visits, it should be done secretly without others knowing}}
