(Taking along servants. These servants are assigned from the initial riding period.) For the waiting place, if it is clear weather, wait at the lawn of Ōta; if it is rainy weather, wait at the Ōta worship hall.
During the second year of Kanpō era, due to the shrine reconstruction, both high and low-ranking construction workers were stationed there, so there was discussion about whether each person should bring a servant. However, with individual servants, there would be too many people and it might look unseemly. There was also a suggestion that if the weather was clear, various swords should be brought and worn at that location, but since two attendants could not carry twenty people's swords, it was concluded that grass sandals and straw sandals would be best, just as for morning worship.
On the 4th day, as soon as the red rice is ready, to pray for the safe completion of tomorrow's (5th day) mounted competition, offer sake and red rice to our shrine, Ōta Shrine, and the tutelary deity shrine (though offerings to Ōta Shrine and the tutelary deity shrine are optional). After that, distribute red rice to various places. Offer sake, dried foods, and red rice (washed rice is not necessary).
On the 4th day, to request prayers for the safe completion of tomorrow's (5th day) mounted competition, send a request to the head of purification practitioners. Separately, bring and send two shō of first-fruit rice (also send red rice together).
On the 4th day, after returning from Shimogamo, around the hour of the Sheep (2-4 PM), following the bell of Jingū-ji temple, go to collect iris. At this time, bring three types: twisted whips and iris (two replacement iris, thirty with stone weights, forty with stone weights).
However, for the twisted whips, the left side should insert it at the left waist with the whip's tip pointing backward, and the right side should do the same at the right waist. For the iris too, the right side should hold it tucked under the right arm, and the left side under the left arm. When blowing, the left side should use the right hand, and the right side should use the left hand.
From the entrance of Kajita to the base of Nara's torii gate, the arrow-sword bearer stands in yellow robes with iris tucked under both arms. Each person takes two iris according to their left or right position (these two iris are taken home to be tied and used as belts for the riders on the 5th day). Proceed from the north of the imperial residence to the western stairs, line up on the veranda (facing north-up, west-facing) and wait for the deputy shrine administrator. Twenty people sit in order.
During the divine procession, descend the stairs (everyone prostrates), and after the shrine administrator performs the temporary shrine invocation, sit beside the deputy shrine administrator. The riders crouch in a single line from first position, alternating left and right, facing south-west-up-north. In ceremonial order, two people at a time (left and right) advance to blow the iris and exchange them (advance to the temporary shrine, make one bow before the standing sand, blow the iris, then approach the front of the sacred curtain and mutually present iris from both sides, extending them horizontally for exchange. Then make one bow and withdraw, bow once to the deputy shrine administrator while walking, return to original seats. Remain seated until all twenty people finish, then disperse). After the twenty people finish, the second...
