製糸の器械については、従来のものは一人が一本の糸を製するものであったが、近頃は二本の糸を繰るものがある。よく注意すれば害はないといえども、雇い人に製糸をさせると、たとえ一本あるいは二三本の糸が切れることがあっても、そのままに繰り続け、やむを得ない場合に他の繭を加える際に、糸口を探してつなぐことをしないため、使用する時になって糸が乱れて大きな不都合を生じることになる。
前橋に小さな製糸器がある。士族の速水健蔵という者が旧藩主に建言して、スイス人を頼んで雇って造らせたものである。

水車の機関を用いて運転する。この器械で製した糸は最も精良との名声がある。これは機械を用いることの先駆けである。この一事は速水のために言わざるを得ないことである。
富岡に製糸局を建設し、ほぼ完成に至ろうとしている。蒸気機関で、随分盛大なものである。完全に完成すれば、生糸が精良になることは目を見張って待つべきである。
蚕室の構造は島村の製法が他の地方より優れているとする。これは田嶋邦寧、田嶋武平、その他数名が心を合わせて成し遂げたものである。これは島村の養蚕家のために一言せざるを得ない。

Regarding silk reeling equipment, the conventional machines were designed for one person to reel one thread, but recently there are machines that reel two threads. While there is no harm if proper attention is paid, when hired workers do the reeling, even if one or two or three threads break, they continue reeling as is, and when it becomes necessary to add other cocoons, they fail to search for the thread ends to connect them properly. This results in tangled threads that cause great inconvenience when used.
In Maebashi, there is a small silk reeling machine. A samurai named Hayamizu Kenzō made a proposal to his former feudal lord and hired a Swiss person to construct it.

It operates using a water wheel mechanism. The thread produced by this machine has the reputation of being of the finest quality. This is the pioneering use of machinery. This matter must be mentioned for Hayamizu's sake.
A silk reeling factory is being constructed in Tomioka and is nearly completed. It uses steam engines and is quite magnificent. When fully completed, we should eagerly await the production of superior raw silk.
Regarding the construction of silkworm rooms, the methods of Shimamura are considered superior to those of other regions. This was accomplished through the combined efforts of Tajima Kuniyasu, Tajima Buhei, and several others. This must be mentioned for the sake of the sericulturists of Shimamura.
