子青赤ニシテ似リ蕎麥ノ 殻（カラ）ニ是和ニ大黄ト巳者此
也夏至ニ即枯ル秋深即生凌冬不枯本草ニ
莖赤ト云者不合与此 酸模（ホカンポ）共ニ名大黄也
一莖其葉不シテ長カラ似馬蹄ノ形ニ葉先不尖一
本ヨリ葉多此一種ニシテ花實相同ス

羊蹄には二種ある。一種は葉が長くて牛の舌に似ているので牛舌
菜という。野に多く生じ、夏秋に花台を起こして黄色の花を開く。その
実は青赤色で蕎麦の殻に似ている。これが和の大黄といわれるものである。
夏至に枯れ、秋深くに生じ、冬を越しても枯れない。『本草』に
茎が赤いというのは、これには当てはまらない。酸模（ホカンボ）とともに大黄と名付けられる。
もう一種はその葉が長くなく馬蹄の形に似て、葉先が尖らない。一
本から葉が多い。この一種で花と実は相同じである。

Sheep's dock (Shi) is a single-character name. Generally, grasses with single-character names are Japanese names:

Sheep's dock has two varieties. One variety has long leaves resembling an ox tongue, hence called ox-tongue
vegetable. It grows abundantly in fields, sends up flower stalks in summer and autumn, and blooms yellow flowers. Its
seeds are blue-red and resemble buckwheat husks. This is what is called Japanese rhubarb.
It withers at summer solstice, grows in deep autumn, and does not wither through winter. What the "Honzo"
describes as having red stems does not match this. Together with sorrel (Hokanbo), it is called rhubarb.
The other variety has leaves that are not long and resemble the shape of a horse's hoof, with leaf tips not pointed. One
plant has many leaves. This variety has similar flowers and fruits.
