- In the ninth month of Genroku 1 (Year of the Dragon, 1688), upon repeated petition, he was relieved of his official duties and, in accordance with his private request, was immediately ordered to retire (inkyo).
- On the twenty-second day of the seventh month of the fourth year of the same era (Genroku 4, Year of the Ram, 1691), he died of illness at the age of seventy-one. His posthumous Buddhist name (hōmyō) was Shakugakuho; the officiating priest was from Muryōzan Chōmei-ji temple; his burial place was Ōkubo-yama.
