that they would likely not receive ten thousand koku, and therefore those who wished to enter the service of another clan should, for the time being, disperse as each saw fit. Accordingly, the three brothers — Han'uemon, Chūzaemon, and Tarōbei — left the Hori clan's service and made their way to Edo, where they lived as rōnin. In the fifth month of the first year of Shōtoku, a retainer of Tōdō Daigaku-no-Kami, the lord of Tsu Castle in Ise Province, named Minoura Tōbei, sent a confidential letter to the former lord Tango-no-Kami's chief retainers, conveying that Lord Daigaku intended to take into his service the three brothers known as Han'uemon and his siblings, and requesting that they act as intermediaries.

[The letter asked] whether they might also learn the parties' private thoughts on the matter. Tango-no-Kami's chief retainers — Sawa Mihachirōbei, Nakai Yahei, and Hori Shuzen — replied that if they deemed it appropriate, they would act as go-betweens. In response, [the three brothers] replied that if they were to be provided stipends equal to what they had received while in the Hori clan's service, they would accept the offer, and they respectfully requested that this be arranged. However, [it was conveyed] that the high stipends they had received from the Hori clan were granted under particular circumstances, and that newly engaged retainers could not be treated in the same manner.
