## From the *Zensei Shi* (然犀志): The Three-Legged Toad Fish (*Sankaku-tan-gyo* / 三脚膽魚)
**[Left folio: Includes illustration]**
The *Zensei Shi* states: The three-legged toad fish belongs to the fish family. Its form resembles a tadpole and is flattened. When its left and right fins are brought together, it looks exactly like a three-legged toad (*senjo* / 蟾蜍), hence the name. Its mouth is large, with fine teeth as thin as needles and as densely packed as down feathers. The lower jaw protrudes beyond the inner edge of the lips, and within that area there is a separate cavity, like a second inner lip. The eyes are positioned on top of the back. To the left and right are two spines, each branching into forks. On the underside of the belly there are two short legs, each bearing five claws. The back is yellowish-black in color, the belly is white, and the fish has no scales.
