**Right Folio (with illustration)** **Upper Section:** According to *Nansan-shi* (南産志, "Records of Southern Products"): "The black ray (*kuro-ei*) is shaped like a round fan; because its head resembles that of a swallow (*tsubame*), it is called the Swallow Ray (*tsubame-ei*)." In Nagaoka, Echigo Province, it is called "Konpei Yokosa □□ (possibly *ei*/ray)?" — text partially obscured beneath the illustration. "Its form resembles [the Red Ray (*aka-ei*)], its color is black, and its tail is long." **Lower Section:** According to *Buppin* (物品, "Material Goods"): The *Sa-ei* is small in form, reddish-black in color, and larger specimens can exceed one shaku (approx. 30 cm) in length. According to *Buppin Mokuroku* (物品目録, "Catalogue of Material Goods"): "The *Bantasen* (*坂田鱣*) measures two to three shaku in length; the head is round and flat, resembling a round fan; the body is narrow and long..." (text continues, partially lost) (Marginal note beside illustration): *Uchiwa-zame* (Fan Shark) --- **Left Folio (with illustration)** **Sticky note (see previous frame):** *Katatabori* **Upper Section:** On the Cow Ray (*Ushi-ei*), from *Buppin*: - The *Gin-ebi* (Silver Ray) is darker in color than the Red Ray (*Aka-ei*). It resembles the Red Ray but is not as fine in appearance. - The *Nabe-ebi* from Tajiri in Hitachi Province (modern Ibaraki) is considered the least attractive and is very dark. - People of Matsumae (Hokkaido) call it *Kasube* and prepare it as a dried/cured product (*hoshi-mono*) similar to that made from Red Ray. - People of Sendai call it *Karakai-ebi*. It belongs to the ray family, lacks a stinging spine, has a faint wisteria-purple color, and the smaller ones are called *Kasebi*. The dried form is called *Renden*. It can be eaten as sashimi, but its flavor does not match that of the Red Ray. - According to *Ise no Tadashi*: "It resembles the Red Ray, but the flesh is thicker, tends toward black in color, and there is a slightly dark area on the belly. Its flavor is somewhat inferior to the Red Ray. The belly side is like a cooled Red Ray, and the flesh too is thinner than the *Mae-ebi*." - According to *Kaimono* (*Keimō*, 啓蒙): "The Cow Ray (*Ushi-ei*), also known as the Black Ray (*Kuro-ei*). In Seishū (Ise Province) it is called *Ushiū*; in Sendai, [another name]. Its color is black; large specimens reach about six shaku (approx. 180 cm). It is considered low quality. This corresponds to the *Gyūgyo* (牛魚, 'Cow Fish') of the *Binsho* (閩書, a Chinese reference work)." **Lower Section:** The *Katatabori* from Geishū (Aki Province, modern Hiroshima) is a type of black ray. The way it is consumed is the same as with the Red Ray. It can also be caught by fishing. Large specimens reach about six shaku in length. **Ink notation (upper left):** 六 (Six)
