現代語訳
【右丁（挿絵あり）】
トンビエイは別に頭があり、杓子（しゃくし）のような形で厚みがある。裏側に口がある。色は鳶色（とびいろ）。
写真状に円形で頭部は全体としてヒキガエル（蟾）に似る。背は蒼黒色、腹は白く、ひれは尾にかけて連なる。味は下品（下等）で、値段は安い。

九十九里では「トンビエイ」と呼び、別名「タカマル」とも言う。
「ハトエビ」は「トビエビ」のことである。
トビエイは芸州（広島）では大きさ五尺ほどのものが釣れる。
『物品』では「ハツエイ」・「トンビエイ」・「トビエイ」・「トリエイ」とも記されている。
伊勢の忠（イセノ忠）が言う：「肉は厚く、マエビよりもやや肉が硬い。」
魚商（魚の商人）が言う：「トンビは大きくても三尺ほどを超えることはない。」
『大和本草』に言う：「トビエイは鼠色（ねずみいろ）で、亀の頭のような形をしている。」

**Right Folio (with illustration)**
The Tonbi-ei (Kite Ray) has a distinct head shaped like a ladle (*shakushi*), thick in form. The mouth is located on the underside. Its color is *tobi-iro* (kite-brown, a dark reddish-brown).
In overall form it is circular, and the head closely resembles that of a toad (*hikigaeru*/*sen*). The back is dark bluish-black, the belly is white, and the fins extend along toward the tail. Its flavor is considered low quality, and its price is cheap.

In Kujūkuri (Chiba), it is called *Tonbi-ei*, and alternatively *Takamaru*.
"*Hato-ebi*" is another name for *Tobi-ebi* (Flying Ray).
The *Tobi-ei* in Geishū (Aki Province, modern Hiroshima) can be caught at sizes of up to about five shaku (approx. 150 cm).
In *Buppin* (物品, "Material Goods"), it is recorded under the names *Hatsu-ei*, *Tonbi-ei*, *Tobi-ei*, and *Tori-ei*.
According to *Ise no Tadashi*: "The flesh is thick and somewhat firmer than that of the *Mae-ebi*."
A fish merchant says: "The Tonbi does not exceed about three shaku (approx. 90 cm) even at its largest."
According to *Yamato Honzō* (大和本草, "Japanese Materia Medica"): "The *Tobi-ei* is mouse-grey in color and its head is shaped like that of a turtle."
