原序
このフランスとドイツの戦争は、その両国と非常に親密に交流している我が国民にとって、この上ない教訓となるものであるから、簡潔明瞭な一書を編纂して戦争の経過を詳しく論じないわけにはいかない。
そこで編者の大きな目標は、できるだけ十分で正確な説明を記そうと思う。ここにおいて、街の噂話を聞くたびに政府の公報の説に従って取捨選択し、あるいはその戦場を目撃した者の真実の報告を採用して、それによって真偽を判別し、かつ戦場の地図と政府公報の詳細な説明について間違いがないように、その行動を明らかにする。

Original Preface
This war between France and Germany will serve as an invaluable lesson for our countrymen who maintain very intimate relations with both nations. Therefore, we cannot help but compile a concise and clear book to discuss in detail the course of this war.
Thus, the compiler's main objective is to record as complete and accurate an account as possible. In doing so, whenever we hear street rumors and gossip, we follow the accounts in official government reports to make proper selections, or we adopt truthful reports from those who witnessed the battlefields firsthand, thereby distinguishing truth from falsehood, and clarifying the military movements without error by consulting battlefield maps and detailed explanations from official reports.
