しようと思う。○発端には戦争の原因と両国の海陸軍及び貧富について論じ、かつ両国の武器の説明並びに強弱の比較と戦争中に卓越した英雄の肖像伝を載せた。これらは皆戦争の事に関わらず、平常の実情を得ようと欲したのである。その引用するところは皆実録中あるいは多く信ずべき説より抄出した。地図においては、ドイツ、フランスの原本で実に精密なものより集成した。かつ肖像は疑いもない本図より出して、我が国の名工の手に描かせたものである。○我々が必要な多くの珍しい説や奇談を得たのは、全く下文に挙げる新聞紙の功績と言うべきである。

I intend to do so. ○ At the beginning, I discuss the causes of the war and the naval and land forces as well as the wealth and poverty of both nations, and I have included explanations of both countries' weapons, comparisons of their strengths and weaknesses, and biographical portraits of heroes who distinguished themselves during the war. All of these aim to capture the actual circumstances in peacetime, regardless of the war itself. All the sources I cite are extracted from actual records or from accounts that are largely trustworthy. Regarding the maps, I have compiled them from German and French originals that are extremely precise. Moreover, the portraits are taken from unquestionable original images and drawn by the skilled craftsmen of our country. ○ The fact that we obtained many necessary rare accounts and curious tales is entirely due to the merit of the newspapers listed below.
