The Prussian needle gun was an invention of Herr Dreyse, a gunsmith. This man had once aspired to create a perfectly functional breech-loading rifled gun for practical use, and devoted tremendous energy to the endeavor over the course of thirty years.
The fundamental problem was that he found himself at an impasse regarding how to devise a mechanism suitable for a breech-loading gun that would ignite by means of a needle penetrating into the percussion tube — that is, the fulminating powder — contained within the cartridge.
