現代語訳

【都鳥（ミヤコドリ）】

志州（志摩国）にて「ニッコベ」、「ウバチドリ」、「ウバシキ」とも呼ばれる。

姿はシギに似ているが、より大きい。目は黄色い環（虹彩）を持ち、その縁は赤く、外側は白い縁取りがある。嘴は長大で、根元は赤褐色、先端は黄色い。足は高く（長く）、淡い紅色で、三趾（三本指）。頭頂から胸・背の羽の上を通って尾の先端まで黒い。胸の下から翼の付け根へと回り込み、翼の端と尾の根元は純白。

『伊勢物語』には「鴫の大きくて、嘴と足が赤く、白い鳥」とあるが、それとは少し違うようにも見える。しかし白い羽が多いため、「白い鳥」とだけ記したのかもしれず、同じ鳥のことかどうか、にわかには判断しがたい。

英語訳

**Miyako-dori (Eurasian Oystercatcher)**

In the province of Shima (Shishū), it is also called "Nikkobe," "Uba-chidori," and "Uba-shiki."

In form, it resembles a snipe (*shigi*) but is larger. The eye has a yellow iris with a red ring around it, and a white outer border. The beak is long and large, reddish-brown at the base and yellow at the tip. The legs are tall (long), pale pinkish-red, with three toes. From the crown of the head, running over the chest and the upper back feathers, through to the tip of the tail, the plumage is black. From below the chest, wrapping around to the base of the wings, the wing tips and the base of the tail are pure white.

In *The Tales of Ise* (*Ise Monogatari*), a bird is described as "a large snipe-like bird with a red beak and red feet, white in color," which does not entirely match this description. However, since this bird has abundant white feathers, it may be that the author simply described it as "white," and it is difficult to say with certainty whether or not they refer to the same bird.
