**[Right Page]** This (*Soe*) is also different from *umi-iwashi* (sea sardine/herring). [Appendix] Whales in icy seas eat *kawa-gaiko* (*mina*) [a small shellfish or crustacean]. Furthermore, *Seihonto* [referring to the water leopard, i.e., seals] steal the food of whales. It is said that when white fish (*shiro-uo*) are plentiful, whales gather in large numbers. According to the account of the Dutch, since the whale is such a fat-rich creature, it could hardly become so [large and fat] merely by eating *kawa-gaiko*; the details of its diet remain unknown. **Teeth** - *Hige* (baleen / whalebone) [Appendix] *Hisubeen* [Dutch]; *Balein* [same (Dutch)] **[Left Page]** [The baleen] is found in the middle of the gill-cheek area, growing within the mouth in the manner of teeth. The color is black or pale-black, tinged with a faint green, and it has longitudinal and transverse grain patterns, resembling the horn of a water buffalo. [*Geishi* ("Records of Whales")] Two species—the *ko-kujira* (gray whale) and the *iwashi-kujira* (sei whale)—have baleen that is white in color, with pale black longitudinal striations. [*Santei Geishi* ("Revised and Edited Records of Whales")] The small ones measure one to three *shaku* [approx. 30–90 cm], the large ones up to one *jō* two *shaku* [approx. 360 cm]; thickness is three to four *bu* [approx. 9–12 mm] or as much as one *sun* [approx. 3 cm]; width is three to four *sun* [approx. 9–12 cm] or as much as one *shaku* [approx. 30 cm]; the total number is approximately over three hundred plates. The baleen grows on the upper jaw and is absent from the lower jaw. [*Geiki* ("Record of Whales")] It grows only in the upper jaw (*uwa-aki*), and appears to serve as a substitute for teeth. There are approximately 180 plates on one side, making approximately 360 in total for both sides. However, the number varies somewhat. In most cases, [the number is] around 368, continuing below...
