……のS字の形に似ている。上下の唇にはそれぞれ内唇と外唇があり、上唇の内側のやや上の部分には、黒色または濃い灰色の縞模様があり、唇の形に沿って広がっている。この唇は滑らかで、色は全体的に黒く、その曲がり方は円を四等分したような形である。

また、ヒュブネルによれば、唇の厚さは膏肉（脂肪と肉）合わせて一エル〔曲尺で二尺二寸八分に相当〕ある、とのことである。

・タナノウチ〔俗に唇を「棚」と呼ぶため、口中の棚（唇）の内側を指す〕

口の様子は、他の魚と大いに異なる。

　　〔按ずるに〕鯨の餌（えさ）についてはいまだ詳しくは分からない。私が平戸で聞いたところでは、鯨はこれほど大きな魚であるにもかかわらず、胃袋の中に何かが入っていたということはない〔『鯨記』にも、食べ物が腹の中にあったためしがなく、何を食べてこれほど太っているのか、不思議な魚だと記されている〕。その中でも座頭（ザトウクジラ）は、苗蝦（アミ）と呼ばれるエビのようなものを食べていたことが時々あるが、それ以外の物が胃袋の中にあったことはない、とのことである。蝦夷地（北海道）の東の海では、座頭鯨が「ソヱ」と呼ばれるものを食べるために、多く沿岸地方に近づいてくるという。

These lips are smooth, entirely black in color, and their curvature is like a circle divided into four equal parts (i.e., a quarter-circle arc).

Furthermore, according to Hübner, the thickness of the lip, including blubber and flesh together, amounts to one *ell* [equivalent to approximately 2 *shaku* 2 *sun* 8 *bu* in Japanese *kanejaku* measurement].

The structure of the mouth differs greatly from that of other fish.

　　[Author's note:] The diet of whales is not yet fully understood. What I heard when I was in Hirado was that, despite being such an enormous creature, nothing was ever found inside the whale's stomach. [The *Geiki* ("Record of Whales") also states that food has never been found in the belly, and remarks that it is a mysterious creature, as one wonders what it eats to grow so fat.] Among whales, the *Zatō* (humpback whale) has occasionally been found to have eaten something called *naebiei* (*ami*), a small shrimp-like creature, but nothing else has ever been found in the stomachs. In the eastern seas of Ezochi (Hokkaido), it is said that humpback whales frequently approach the coastal areas to feed on a creature called *Soe*.
