常に桑鳥（イカル）よりやや小さい。目は淡い紅色、嘴は黄色、足は赤色。頭は黒く、項（うなじ）には白い羽毛が少しある。背は赤褐色で色が深い。翅（つばさ）は黒く、翠色（青緑色）の先端に白い模様を成す。腹は灰色、脇は淡い黄色、尾は黒い。
