ふして命（いのち）永（なか）し今（いま）の人（ひと）は厚味（かうみ）を喰（くら）ひ酒色（さけといろ）におぼれ神（しん）を耗（へら）し
精（せい）を労（よはら）すかゆゑに多病（やまひおほく）にして命（いのち）夭（みちか）し其子（そのこ）もまた欲火（よくくは）深（ふか）ふし

こうして命が長い。今の人は美味なものを食べ、酒色におぼれ、神を消耗し精を疲労させるがゆえに病気が多く、命が短い。その子もまた欲火が深くなってできるため、極めて虚弱な者が多く、痘瘡を発症しても順調で美しい経過をたどるものは少ない。また古代はこの厄災が少なかったため、その治療の優れた方法もなかったが、今この難病があるがゆえに、天から名医を降し給い、古代には言われなかった痘瘡の根源を発揮して、諸々の名医たちがこの治療法を論じ定められてからこのかた、世の人がこの難病に遭って逆症を免れる者も少なくない。誠にありがたいことではないか。
しかし古来より言い伝え聞き伝えた奇方妙法などが、時の粗末な医師や俗人などの手に触れて、泥に泥を塗るようになって、是非が明白でなく繁雑になってしまった。およそ万病ともに飲食の禁忌と適応があり、特に痘瘡の禁忌と

適応が最も肝要であって、一つでも誤ることがあれば順症も忽ちに逆症に変わることが迅速である。まして小児の痘瘡においてはなおさらである。前にも記した通り、禁忌を慎み調護を行えば、凶も吉に転じて治ることもある。また妙薬奇方といっても妄りに用いてはならず、医師に任せてその療治を受け、病家では軽々しく口出しすべきではない。医師もまたよくその症状を詳らかにして軽卒なことをしてはならない。
今、世俗で誤って行われていることなどを正し、痘瘡中の介抱の法、四季と部屋の使い分け、食物の禁忌と適応の見分け方、禁忌調護の法、並びに痘神を祭る由来、痘瘡後の酒湯の法などを詳細に分かりやすく解説して記すことは次の通りである。

suitable treatments for smallpox are most essential - if even one thing is done incorrectly, favorable cases can quickly turn adverse. This is especially true for childhood smallpox. As written before, if one is careful about prohibitions and provides proper nursing care, even unfavorable cases can turn favorable and be cured. Also, even with miraculous medicines and wonderful prescriptions, they should not be used carelessly. One should entrust treatment to physicians and receive their therapy, and the patient's family should not interfere lightly. Physicians too should examine the symptoms thoroughly and not act rashly.
