しいことであるが、秋南江の『鬼神論』にも見えない。私が思うに、すべて神は�穢れ気や不浄を忌み嫌うものであるから、痘瘡患者がいる家では努めて清浄を第一とすべきである。
神が果たして存在するかどうかは暫く置いて、痘疹は穢れ気・不浄を忌むものであるから、
その居間に神が在ますと思えば自然と清浄を心がけるので、痘瘡患者が穢れ気に感染し不浄を被ることはないであろう。それ故に痘瘡患者のためにも良い。特に
病気の最中に神祭りをして祝うことは心に快いものであるから、大いに祭るのは
良い。しかしながら、神のみに頼って薬治を疎かにするのは愚かなことの極みである。
祭事の弁
国々によって神棚の供え物や祭りの方法などが違うことがあるといっても、大体

家の入口に注連縄を張って紅紙で幣を垂らし置き、また寝室の入口にもそのようにするのは、穢れ気・不浄を避けるためである。寝室に神棚を設けて《割書：一尺程高く飾るものもあり、また天井板の下に吊るものもある》
紅紙を敷き、猩々・達磨・猿面等の赤い色の人形を置き、
或いは縁起の良い人形などを飾り置くものもある。いずれも紅色を取り、祝いを取ったものである。また御酒の徳利を紅紙で口を飾り、常灯明を点し、魚・菓子を供える《割書：紅餅・紅団子・赤小豆飯・赤鯛・あかめばる・ほうぼう・糸より鯛・かながしらの類を供える》。いずれも紅色なるものを供えることである。伝え聞くに、中国でも痘の正しい色は紅を貴び、喜慶のことにも紅色を用いるので、痘瘡のある家には紅色を好むという。

This is a harsh matter, but it is not even mentioned in Shūnankō's "Kishinron" (Theory of Demons and Spirits). In my opinion, all deities detest impurity and defilement, so households with smallpox patients should make cleanliness their first priority.
Setting aside for now whether gods truly exist or not, since smallpox abhors impure air and defilement, if one believes that a deity resides in the patient's room, one will naturally be mindful of cleanliness, and thus the smallpox patient will not be infected by impure air or suffer defilement. Therefore, this is also good for the smallpox patient. Particularly, holding divine festivals and celebrations during illness brings comfort to the heart, so it is good to hold such festivals extensively. However, to rely solely on the deity while neglecting medical treatment is the height of foolishness.
Discussion of Ritual Practices
Although the offerings for household shrines and festival methods differ from region to region, generally speaking,

Sacred ropes (shimenawa) are hung at the entrance of the house with paper streamers made of red paper hanging down, and the same is done at the entrance to the bedroom to ward off impure air and defilement. A household shrine is set up in the bedroom 《marginal note: some are decorated about one foot high, others are hung below the ceiling boards》
Red paper is laid out, and red-colored dolls such as shōjō (mythical creatures), Daruma, and monkey masks are placed, or sometimes auspicious dolls are decorated and placed. All of these use red colors and are meant for celebration. Also, sake bottles are decorated with red paper at the mouth, perpetual lamps are lit, and fish and sweets are offered 《marginal note: red rice cakes, red dumplings, red azuki bean rice, red sea bream, red rockfish, gurnard, thread-sail filefish, red sea bream, red gurnard and the like are offered》. According to tradition, in China too, the proper color for smallpox is red, which is treasured, and red color is used for joyous occasions, so households with smallpox prefer red colors.
