種（いろ）々の品（しな）ありといへども何（いつ）れもましなひにてさしたる由所（わけ）あるにあ

穢気不浄を避る説
諸書（しよしよ）にくはしく穢気（えぎ）を避（さく）るの弁（へん）あり今（いま）和解（わげ）して俗家（そくか）に
現代語訳

種々の品があるといっても、どれも迷信的なもので、特に根拠があるわけではない。見聞に及ぶところの一、二を左に記す。
馬の沓を飾ることがある。馬は痒い所があっても思うままに掻くことができないため、痒みを我慢するということから取り入れられたものであろうか。
箕を飾り置いて、痘瘡患者が頭や手などを痒がれば箕の上の方を掻き、足や腰を痒がれば箕の下の方を掻くことがある。箕は「身」という意味で、身の痒みを箕の身に移すという意味なのであろうか。
引臼を飾ることがある。これは始めから終わりまで順調に回るという意味を取ったものであろう。
産俵は俵の蓋で米穀をこぼさないものであるから、痘瘡の頂上から膿を漏ら

さないという意味を取って飾り置くものであろう。
これらの類はいろいろあるといっても、どれもこのような意味で推察すべきであり、特に理由があるわけではない。
また痘瘡患者のある家で神棚の側に貼り置く歌に
痘瘡の宿は問えばあともなし この所にはいもせざらまし
この歌は御詠であるということを聞き伝えているが、私はまだ詳しく調べる時間がない。とりあえず記して再考を待つ。

Although there are various items, they are all superstitious practices without any particular basis. I record below one or two that have come to my attention.
There is a practice of displaying horse shoes. Perhaps this comes from the idea that horses must endure itching since they cannot scratch wherever they feel itchy at will.
A winnowing basket is displayed, and when a smallpox patient feels itchy on the head or hands, they scratch the upper part of the basket, and when they feel itchy on the feet or waist, they scratch the lower part of the basket. The winnowing basket (mi) may represent the body (mi), meaning to transfer the body's itchiness to the basket's "body."
There is a practice of displaying a hand mill. This probably takes the meaning of rotating smoothly from beginning to end.
A birth straw bag is a straw cover that prevents rice and grain from spilling, so it is displayed with the meaning of preventing pus from leaking

from the top of smallpox lesions.
Although there are various types of these practices, they should all be understood in this manner, and there are no particular reasons for them.
Also, in houses with smallpox patients, a poem is posted beside the household shrine:
"If you ask for the dwelling of smallpox, there is no trace - in this place, let there be no brothers and sisters"
I have heard that this poem is an imperial composition, but I have not yet had time to investigate it thoroughly. I record it temporarily and await further examination.
