No. 30 Contributed Report Edited by Jishū-sha
[Text]
An honest, upright deed is a pleasant thing merely to hear about. A clerk (tedai) of a certain merchant in the Tenma district of Osaka went out to collect outstanding accounts, and somewhere along the way received a five-yen note. On returning he handed it to the head manager, who told him, "This is a counterfeit." Greatly alarmed, and thinking to make good his blunder, he took the counterfeit note to the shop of Okada Seizō in Kōraibashi 4-chōme to buy revenue stamps. As it happened, Okada the master was out, and since it was a woman who attended him, she took the false note without a second thought.
The clerk, delighted at having pulled it off, went home and was recounting the affair to his fellow employees when his master overheard him. The master was furious: "To knowingly pass a counterfeit note is to entrap another person. To do so heartless a thing is utterly outrageous. Go at once, apologize to Mr. Okada, and get the note back." The clerk, submitting to the justice of this, went off to Okada's. But at Okada's the master had also returned home, and seeing that the note taken in during his absence was a counterfeit, had said, "If such a thing passes into other people's hands, someone is bound to suffer for it" — and had immediately torn it up and thrown it away.
Just then the clerk arrived, delivered his master's message, apologized profusely, and offered a genuine five yen. Okada, however, would not accept it: "That the counterfeit was taken was our own error. I have already torn it up, as you see. There is no need for you to replace it." The clerk, deeply impressed, returned home and reported this to his master, who at once went to Okada's himself, apologized for his clerk's misdeed, and offered the replacement money. But Okada would by no means take it. The two pressed the matter back and forth upon each other, until at last they agreed that each side should bear half the loss, and two yen fifty sen was handed over to Mr. Okada. Truly, the disposition of both men is admirable.
