お梅とて是も五十二三
とかや此（この）お梅には本夫
ありいかゞの縁（ゑん）や五良
右ヱ門と奸通（かんつう）なせしを
評判（へうばん）になりしは天のしる処（ところ）
今はたまらず両人は闇夜（あんや）に
まぎれかけおちは梅川忠兵ヱが様（やう）なれど
老人 達（たち）が彼風（かのふう）はいと馬鹿々々（ばか〳〵）しやにくむべし

姦通というものは、盗みの心と同じことである。さてここに珍妙な老人の話がある。所は福島あたりだとか。五郎右衛門という者で、歳は六十を三つ四つも越えているというのに、同じ村のお梅という女――これもまた五十二、三だとか――と道ならぬ仲になった。このお梅にはれっきとした夫がある。いったいどういう因縁であろうか、五郎右衛門と姦通したことが世間の評判になってしまったのは、まさに天の知るところ（天罰）というものである。

今はもう堪えきれず、二人は闇夜にまぎれて駆け落ちした。その様子はさながら梅川・忠兵衛の道行きのようではあるが、老人たちのそんな真似ごとは、まことに馬鹿ばかしく、憎むべきことである。

Adultery is one and the same thing as the mind of a thief. And here is a curious tale of some old folk. The place, they say, is somewhere around Fukushima. There was a man called Gorōemon, who, though he was three or four years past sixty, took up an illicit relationship with a woman of the same village named O-Ume — she too, they say, about fifty-two or fifty-three. Now this O-Ume has a lawful husband of her own. By what strange karma was it, then, that her adultery with Gorōemon became the talk of the town? Surely it is what Heaven knows and reveals.

At last, unable to endure it any longer, the two slipped away under cover of a dark night and eloped — a scene rather like the flight of Umegawa and Chūbei; but such carryings-on by old people are utterly ridiculous and deserve nothing but contempt.
