Konobu, now the second-generation Wata-Masa, blocks Sadanobu, artist Carver: Kyūichi [Main text] Suzuki Sadajirō, a stipendless shizoku (former samurai) of Haramachi, Koishikawa, Tokyo, was murdered by a vicious robber. The particulars of the affair are as follows: It happened around four o'clock in the morning of the thirty-first day of the third month of Meiji 8 (1875). Just as blossoms are cruelly scattered by a storm, a deba (cleaver-type kitchen knife) lay fallen at the scene; Ishikawa Kinzō, an official of the fourth grade of the Fourth Great District, was ordered to take it up, and he studied it long and hard. Then, following the direction in which the footprints led, and hastening as though whipping on a horse, he sought a clue in the fact that Tomikawa Yohachi of Katamachi in Komagome had sold such a knife that very day. He then learned that Sadajirō had been on bad terms with his only son Chōnosuke and had divided the household so that they lived apart. Summoning Chōnosuke away, he searched the chest of drawers in his absence, and sure enough Sadajirō's clothing was found there. Thus the culprit was determined to be the son himself, and he was arrested on the spot. Truly, Heaven was swift to expose such savage wickedness, and swift too was the appearance of a policeman of such fine ability — a fearsome thing indeed.
