In Nihonbashi 4-chōme, in Osaka Prefecture, there lives a man called Tamoto Yasuke. Since the far-off days of the old quarter whose very name is "old," he has passed through an immense span of years, and now maintains an age of one hundred and six. His body is as sturdy and diligent ("mame") as the piled-up beans of all the Setsubun nights he has heaped up year by year; that he should be hale beyond ten thousand men is a thing rare since ancient times. The character "ki" (kiju, seventy-seven) and the character "yone" (beiju, eighty-eight) he left behind him long ago; only if someone like Miura no Ōsuke were here could he draw his knees close and talk as an equal — such is his longevity. For this he was summoned to the prefectural office and granted a certain sum of money as a reward.
Someone, it seems, hummed this comic verse:
"His life numbers a hundred and six — Master Tamoto Yasuke;
how very rare a man to meet with — here in Ōsaka (Ōsaka = ōsaka, 'the slope of meeting')."
