現代語訳
平仮名絵入新聞 第十六号
五月十四日の夜、芝口二丁目の荒物屋・原三平の家に押し入った泥棒。
朝比奈の張子の面をかぶり、紺の風呂敷で顔を包み、抜き身の刀を提げて、お定まりの文句で「金を出せ」と言う。女房は震えながら、ほんのわずかな金を差し出した。すると「これでは足りぬ、着物を出せ」と言う。「はいはい」と箪笥の引き出しから三、四枚取り出すのを、泥棒がその着物を包もうとして刀を下に置いた、その隙に、三平はすかさず刀を奪い取り、泥棒の顔に五太刀斬りつけた。
朝比奈（の面をかぶった泥棒）も「ワッ」と叫んで倒れたところへ、巡査が駆けつけて来た。三平はそれを泥棒の仲間かと思って斬りつけたが、巡査は棒（十手）でこれを受け止め、「廻りの秀盛であるぞ」と名乗ったので、三平もようやく気がついた。（そのすきに）泥棒は逃亡してしまった。

Hiragana Ehiri Shinbun (Illustrated Newspaper in Kana), No. 16
On the night of the fourteenth of the fifth month, a burglar broke into the house of Hara Sanpei, a dealer in household sundries in Shibaguchi Nichōme.
He wore a papier‑mâché mask of Asahina, wrapped his face in a dark‑blue furoshiki, and, holding a drawn sword, demanded in the usual formula, "Hand over your money!" The wife, trembling, brought out a trifling sum. "That's not enough — bring out your clothes!" he said. "Yes, yes," she answered, and took three or four garments from a chest of drawers. As the burglar set his sword down to bundle up the clothes, Sanpei instantly seized the sword and slashed the robber's face five times.
"Asahina" cried out and collapsed. Just then a policeman came running up; Sanpei, mistaking him for the robber's accomplice, struck at him, but the officer parried the blow with his staff (jitte), calling out, "I am Hidemori of the patrol!" — at which Sanpei at last came to his senses. Meanwhile the burglar made his escape.
