Illustrated Newspaper, No. 18 Drawn by Chikashige O‑Kin, the wife of a sawyer named Matsugorō who lived in Nagashima‑chō, ran a small business selling sundries and went about calling on customers here and there. But she had long been a heavy drinker, and besides that she was fond of snacking and eating out, so her small profits could never keep up with her spending. So, keeping it hidden from her husband, she borrowed money from various people using her husband Matsugorō's name and spent it. As the saying goes, "dust piles up into a mountain," and at last the debts grew beyond anything she could manage on her own. Feeling that she could not face Matsugorō, she threw herself with a splash into the river at (Naga)shima‑chō and drowned. She was only about thirty‑two or three this year, in the prime of life. To throw away one's life for the sake of food — however much of a gourmand's appetite one may have, is that not too foolish a thing?
