肥後国（現在の熊本県）の海中に、毎夜光る物が現れるというので、その土地の役人が出向いて見たところ、図に描いたような姿の者が現れた。そして「私は海中に住む、アマビヱと申す者である。今年から六年の間は諸国は豊作である。しかし同時に疫病が流行するであろう。早々に私の姿を写し取って人々に見せなさい」と言って、海の中へ入っていった。右（上）の写しは、その役人から江戸へ報告してきたものの写しである。

英語訳
In the province of Higo [present-day Kumamoto Prefecture], a shining object appeared in the sea every night, so an official of that district went out to look, whereupon a being of the form shown in the picture appeared. It said: "I am a creature dwelling in the sea, called Amabie. For six years from this year there will be abundant harvests throughout the provinces; but at the same time an epidemic will spread. Quickly draw a picture of me and show it to the people." So saying, it went back down into the sea. The picture above is a copy of the one that this official reported to Edo.
