---
**[Great Misfortune] Natural Smallpox**
*Duration:*
The length of illness varies according to the severity of the case.
*Cost:*
Most of the various preparations and provisions prove to be of no effect.
*Precautions:*
Throughout the illness and in the recovery period, appropriate medical treatment is required in all respects.
*Treatment:*
(No specific notes.)
*Disfigurement:*
Scars and blemishes form on the skin and face, and in some cases permanent deformity results.
*Residual Ailments:*
It is extremely common for patients to be left with ulcers in various parts of the body, skin diseases, glandular disease (lymph node disorders), blindness, deafness, and other conditions.
---
**[Misfortune] Variolation by Insufflation (Kinegawa method)**
*Duration:*
There is variation in the onset of fever; in some cases fever does not develop and distress appears instead.
*Cost:*
(No specific notes.)
*Precautions:*
Avoid cold clothing, and take measures to prevent the illness from turning into diseases of the brain, eyes, or ears.
*Treatment:*
Medicine and nutritional care (*setsuyo*) are indispensable.

The site of inoculation on the arm may become gangrenous and remain unhealed for a long time.

**Introduction to Cowpox (*Gyūtō Hatsumon*): General Treatise — Written by Kuwata Wa**
○ Cowpox vaccination is a newly invented excellent method from the West. By administering it to infants who have not yet contracted smallpox, it protects them from being disfigured with a pockmarked face or dying as a result of the virulent epidemic smallpox. Just as fields such as astronomy and calendar calculation become increasingly clear and refined with the accumulation of years and months, this excellent method has newly spread across the four great continents of the world, and in Kaei 2 (1849) it was finally brought to our country (Japan) — this is truly a great blessing for the people of the world. However, it is also a natural course of things that any excellent method, at its very beginning, is looked upon with suspicion and doubt by people and is difficult to put into practice. Even the teachings of Confucius and Mencius could not escape such a fate. Reflecting on this… *(text continues on the next page)*
