古来より幼子を守る法は林のごとく多けれど、
牛痘の法こそはなはだ深し。

Xījiāngyuè (West River Moon) — a ci-poem
With great compassion and mercy, a vow is made;
To save and deliver all living beings — this is the heart's purpose.
From ancient times, methods for protecting infants have been as numerous as trees in a forest,
Yet the cowpox method is the most profound of all.
The thousand grasses
that might have withered
in snow and frost —
from this day forth,
still green,
shall they meet the spring.
