## The Ritual for Worshipping the God of Smallpox
First, the worship of the god of smallpox (tōshin) is practiced in China just as it is in Japan. The reason red is used in this ritual is that red is considered a proper and auspicious color, used in all matters of reverence and celebration. A sacred rope (shimenawa) should be hung at the entrance of the house, the room should be purified, and a household shrine (kamidana) should be set up according to the customs of the local region.
First, offerings should also be made using red-colored items:
- Red confections
- Red bean rice (sekihan)
- Red sea bream (red snapper)
- Gurnard (hōbō fish)
- Red gurnard (kanagashira fish)
- Threadfin bream (itoyori fish)
- The sake bottle should be decorated at its mouth with red paper
- A perpetual votive light should be lit, and purification by striking sparks (kirabi) should be performed to maintain cleanliness
- Toys and playthings should also be offered
First, in China, it is said that five deities known as the "Huahua Wusheng" (Five Holy Ones of Flowers) are worshipped. In Japan, it is said to be Sumiyoshi Daimyōjin, while others say it is the Saginomori Myōjin, a subsidiary shrine of the Izumo Grand Shrine. In either case, these are divine deities who protect against the evil spirits (jaki) of smallpox.
