下野国の日光、常陸国の筑波、その他の深山の日陰地に生育する。一つの根から一本の茎が出て、淡緑色で白い斑点がある。葉は一本の茎に9枚、或いは11枚つく。周囲に付いている小さな根のものは3枚から5枚の葉がある。

二葉の分岐点から花を咲かせる。基部は筒状で、先端は蓮の花弁のような形をしている。形は虎掌に似ていて、緑色で紫黒色の縦筋がある。中央は円形で長い雄しべがあり、先端に髭状のものはない。淡黄白色である。この雄しべの先端に実をつける。熟すと紅色になり、南五味子（ひなんかつら）の実に似ている。地面近くに生える根の大きなものは一寸ほどで、やや扁平で側面に付属する小根は稀である。蘇頌の説明によると、天南星は「実を結んで穂を作り、石榴の実に似て紅色」とあり、これがそれである。

Arisaema (Tennansho)

Tennamiso (a dialect from Kaga Province, which is a linguistic corruption of "Tennansho")
It grows in the shaded areas of deep mountains in Shimotsuke Province's Nikko, Hitachi Province's Tsukuba, and other locations. One stem grows from one root, pale green in color with white spots. The leaves number 9 or sometimes 11 per stem. Smaller specimens with subsidiary roots around them have 3 to 5 leaves.

The flower emerges from the fork between two leaves. The base is tubular and the tip resembles a single lotus petal. The shape is similar to Pinellia, green in color with purple-black vertical stripes. The center is round with long stamens, without hair-like appendages at the tip. The color is pale yellowish-white. This stamen produces fruit at its tip. When ripe, it turns red and resembles the fruit of southern schisandra (Hinankazura). The root that grows down into the ground, when large, is about one inch long, slightly flattened, and rarely has subsidiary roots attached to the side. According to Su Song's description, Arisaema "produces fruit in spikes resembling pomegranate seeds and red in color" - this is exactly that plant.
