大輪（たいわ）落（おつ）るも多（おほ）し。故（かるがゆへ）に人心（じんしん）何（なに）となく｜恐怖（きやうふ）やまず。日夜（にちや）
易（やす）き心（こころ）もあらずして。只（ただ）安全（あんぜん）をのみ願（ねが）ひしに。原（もと）より
泰平（たいへい）の大御代（おほみよ）ことさら
公にも諸社（しよしや）諸山（しよさん）に御祈（をんいのり）を 命（めい）し給ふよし。よりて

現代語訳
（前ページより続く）大きな輪（土蔵の壁の崩落部分）が落ちるものも多かった。それゆえ、人々の心は何となく恐怖が止まず、昼夜を問わず安らかな気持ちにもなれず、ただ安全だけを願っていた。
もとより泰平の御世であることから、ことさら公儀においても諸社・諸山に御祈祷をお命じくださったとのことで、これにより七月の末頃には、ようやく揺れの回数も減じ、今や八月の初旬には一昼夜にわずか五・六度となったことは、まことにありがたい聖代であると、万民こぞって喜びをなしております。謹んで申し上げます。
この一冊は、少しも世間の慰み話として記したものではなく、遠国・辺境においてはさまざまな風評が立っているため、京都に縁者または知人のある人々が、昼夜安心できずにいると聞き及んだことによる。よって、そのあらましを記し、さらに遠方の人々を安心させたいと願うばかりである。

(Continued from previous page) —and the great rings (sections of collapsed earthen warehouse walls) fell in great numbers. For this reason, people's hearts were filled with a vague and unceasing fear; neither by day nor by night could they find peace of mind, and they prayed only for safety.
This being, as it has always been, an age of great peace, the authorities especially issued commands for prayers to be offered at the various shrines and temples throughout the land. As a result, by around the end of the seventh month, the frequency of the tremors had at last begun to diminish, and now, in early the eighth month, they have dwindled to a mere five or six times per day and night. This is truly a blessed and enlightened reign, and all people rejoice together. With deepest reverence.
This single volume was written not in the least as a diversion or entertainment for the world. It is because in distant provinces and remote regions, all manner of rumors have been circulating, and I have heard that those who have relations or acquaintances in Kyoto have been unable to find peace of mind, day or night. It is for this reason that I have set down the general outline of events, with the sole wish that those in far-off places may be put at ease.
