右に記した人数は、町方の検視を受けた分である。十九日夜八つ時（午前二時頃）までは、検視なしに番付（番号札）によって引取人に引き渡していたとのことである。夜になると、盗賊どもが偽名を使って、遺体を引き取り、衣類などを奪っているという風説（噂）があり、やむを得ず検視によって氏名を確認することになった。このため、死者の人数については噂がまちまちで一致せず、伝え聞いたままを以下に記す。
十九日夕方、永代橋のほとりで死体に番号札を付けた際、その番号を見たところ、百九十四番とあった。

The persons listed above are those who underwent official inspection (kenshi) by the town magistrate's office. Until the hour of the eighth watch (approximately 2 a.m.) on the nineteenth day, bodies had been handed over to claimants without inspection, using only numbered placards. As night fell, there were rumors that thieves, using false names, were claiming bodies in order to steal their clothing and belongings. Therefore, it became necessary to verify names through official inspection. As a result, the reported numbers of casualties varied widely and were inconsistent; the following is recorded as heard from various sources:
On the evening of the nineteenth day, numbered placards were attached to corpses at the approach to Eitaibashi Bridge; when the numbers were observed, they reached as high as number 194.
