愈進、前者欲退不得、一群墜随大河、漂流浮沈、溺死不少、此日
何日乎、災害何暴耶、緇素日臨修仏事、法施慈済惟勤、或人請
予目之所視生霊非命、何以堪之、惻怛之情実不得止、応建塔
以福幽魂、予諾之、可謂下善種干宝地、蟠根永年、干茲焚香持
念、懇祈永代橋下溺水諸霊魂等、出苦海同帰楽邦法界、平等

(卯十二月八日死去) 喜右衛門 卯年生まれ五十二歳
右のうち、忠右衛門・平右衛門については、永代橋の請負人として任命していたところ、去る年(文化四年)八月、深川八幡の祭礼の日に橋が落ちて溺死者が多く出た件、不慮の災難とは申しながら、往来の群集に対して十分な手当・管理が行き届かなかった点もあり、多くの人命にも関わったことから、罪科を逃れがたく、遠島(島流し)を申し付ける。右の喜右衛門については、存命であれば遠島を申し付けるべきところ、病死いたしたため、その旨承知すべきものなり。

【文化丁卯の秋八月十九日、永代橋下溺死精霊慈済塔の写し】
文化丁卯の秋八月十九日、この日、深川八幡宮の神事あり。儀容服飾の美麗は観るべきものあり。都の人々、老若男女こぞってこれに赴く。永代橋の上は狭くして人があふれ、肩と肩がぶつかり、人々は互いに先を争った。にわかに橋が壊れ、中ほどより十余か所にわたって断絶し、禍は不意に出来して、避けるべき場所もなかった。後から来る者はますます進み、前にいる者は退こうとしても退けず、一群の人々が大河に墜ちて、漂い浮き沈みし、溺死者少なからず。この日、何という日ぞ。災害の何と激しきことよ。僧俗ともに日を定めて仏事を修し、法施・慈済に勤め励んだ。ある人が私に請うていわく、目の当たりに見た非命の死を遂げた霊魂に対し、何をもってこれに報いんか。惻怛(そくだつ)の情、まことに止みがたく、塔を建立して幽魂を弔うべきである、と。私はこれを諾した。善き種を宝地に蒔けば、根は永年にわたって広がるべし。ここに香を焚き念を持して、永代橋下に溺れた諸霊魂等が苦海を出でて、ともに楽邦(極楽浄土)に帰し、法界平等にことごとく法の恵みに浴されんことを懇ろに祈る。

(Died on the eighth day of the twelfth month, Year of the Rabbit) — Kiemon, age 52, born in the Year of the Rabbit.
Regarding Chūemon and Heiemon among those listed above: they had been appointed as contractors for the Eitai Bridge, but on the day of the Fukagawa Hachiman festival in the eighth month of last year (Bunka 4), the bridge collapsed, causing many drowning deaths. Although this was an unforeseen disaster, it was also partly due to inadequate management of the large crowds using the bridge. Given that many human lives were lost, they cannot escape punishment, and they are hereby sentenced to exile to a remote island. As for Kiemon, he would have been similarly sentenced to exile had he been alive, but since he died of illness, let this judgment be duly noted.

**Copy of the Memorial Stupa Inscription for the Spirits of Those Who Drowned Beneath Eitai Bridge, Autumn, the Eighteenth Day of the Eighth Month, Bunka, Year of the Hinoto-U (Rabbit)**
On the nineteenth day of the eighth month in the autumn of the Year of Hinoto-U (1807), the festival rites of Fukagawa Hachiman Shrine were held. The ceremonial dress and decorations were magnificent to behold. The people of the city — men and women, young and old — gathered in great numbers to attend. The Eitai Bridge was narrow and packed with people; shoulders pressed against shoulders, and everyone jostled to get ahead. Suddenly the bridge gave way, breaking apart in more than ten places along the middle span. The calamity struck without warning, and there was nowhere to escape. Those behind pressed ever forward, while those in front wished to retreat but could not. A great throng plunged into the wide river, floating and sinking, and no small number drowned. What a day this was! How terrible and violent the disaster! Both clergy and laypeople set appointed days to perform Buddhist memorial services, and diligently offered dharma gifts and acts of compassion. A certain person entreated me, saying: "Having witnessed these souls who died before their time, how can one simply bear it? The feeling of grief and sorrow is truly impossible to suppress. A stupa should be erected to bring blessing to these wandering souls." I agreed to this. It may be said that planting good seeds in sacred ground will allow their roots to spread and grow for eternal years. Here, burning incense and holding fast to our念 (mindful recitation), we earnestly pray that the spirits of all those who drowned beneath Eitai Bridge may depart the sea of suffering and together return to the Land of Bliss, so that all throughout the Dharma realm may equally receive the grace of the Dharma.
