現代語訳
とも宿泊施設としては一軒もなく、福渡戸や塩湯などに滞在している客が来て入浴するだけである。これを方言で「渡り」という。しかしながらこの辺りは所々に名勝が多く、ゆっくりと歩き回れば心が爽やかになるのを感じる。道の左手にはドイツ全権公使品川君の別荘があり、渓流に面し青山に向かって建てられ、その風情は比類がない。また右手にあるのは君嶋氏の荘園である。庭の中に美人高尾の碑が建てられている。北山山本先生の撰文によるもので、その概要によると、高尾は塩原山中塩竈の民家の娘で、吉原街三浦楼第三世の名妓である。容色も諸芸も前後に比べるものがないため、その名は一時に広く知れ渡った。当時、公子や富豪が千金を投げ打って一笑を買おうと欲しても、容易にその機会を得ることはできなかった。一旦東国の太守に身請けされても、高尾はあえて喜ぶ様子もなく、操を情人に守って太守の意に従わず、ついに三又の水上で

However, there are no lodging facilities whatsoever, and guests staying in Fukuwatado or Shionoyu simply come here to bathe. This is called "watari" (crossing/visiting) in the local dialect. Nevertheless, this area has many scenic spots scattered about, and if one strolls leisurely, one feels refreshed in spirit. On the left side of the road stands the villa of Minister Plenipotentiary to Germany, Lord Shinagawa. Facing the mountain stream and looking toward the green mountains, its scenic beauty is incomparable. On the right side is the estate of the Kimijima family. In the garden stands a monument to the beautiful courtesan Takao. It bears an inscription by Master Yamamoto of Hokuzan. According to its summary: Takao was a daughter of a common household in Shiogama in the mountains of Shiobara, and became the third-generation famous courtesan of the Miuraro establishment in Yoshiwara. Her beauty and artistic accomplishments were unmatched before or since, and her fame shook society at the time. Even when nobles and wealthy men threw away thousands of gold pieces hoping to buy a single smile from her, they could not easily obtain such an opportunity. Once, when she was redeemed by a lord of the eastern provinces, Takao showed no sign of joy and remained faithful to her lover, refusing to comply with the lord's wishes, and finally at Mitsumata on the water...
