大道散人戯作
地（ち）に居（ゐ）て乱（らん）を忘（わす）れずとかや爰（こゝ）に八万 奈落（ならく）のぬし鯰（なまづ）ぬら九 郎（らう）
水底（みなそこ）の揺高（ゆれたか）といへる者（もの）おのれが強力無双（かうりきぶそう）なるに慢（ほこ）り家蔵堂社（いへくらどうしや）
をおびやかし人命（じんめい）をそこね天道（てんとう）に逆（そむ）くことたび〳〵なればそのむかし
鹿島大神（かしまだいじん）経津主尊（ふつぬしのみこと）天照（あまてらす）おん神（かみ）の勅（ちよく）を蒙（かふむ）りはせ 向（むかつ）て生捕（いけどり）給ひ

## 鯰太平記混雑噺
**市中隠士・大道散人 戯作**
「地に居て乱を忘れず」とも言うように、ここに八万奈落の主、鯰（なまづ）のぬら九郎、水底の揺高（ゆりたか）という者がいた。自らの怪力無双を誇り、家や蔵・堂・社を脅かし、人命を損ない、天道に背くことが度々あった。そのむかし、鹿島大神・経津主尊が天照大神の勅命を受けて征討に赴き、生け捕りにして、土の獄舎に押し埋め、肝心要の要石（かなめいし）を押さえとして、これを制圧なされたので、揺るぎない御代として栄えてきた。
ところが、時の流れか、天の配剤か——頃は安政二年（1855年）の初冬のこと。八百万の神々が先を争って出雲の国へ出陣された御留守こそ好都合と、「時は来た」と揺高はたちまち反逆心を奮い起こし、謀反の様子を表しながら、回文（かいぶん）をもって味方を招いた。かねてより申し合わせていた一味の面々が、まず一番に駆けつけてきたのは——
**飛火野隼太家焼（とびひのはやた・いえやき）**。その火の燃え出しには、火おどしの鎧に差込の兜、頭巾をいただき、火柱の指物を立て、膝栗毛の弥次馬に燃え立つばかりの紅の厚総をかけ、火勢盛んに馳せ加わった。
**二番には雷語路五郎・音高（かみなりごろごろう・おとたか）**。二本角の前立を打ったる兜に、夕立おどしの鎧、稲妻の太刀に虎の皮の尻鞘をかけ、黒雲の小間にまたがり、一雷鳴（ひとつぶち）打って馳せ加わった。
**第三番には伊豆国の住人、突浪冠者（つなみのかんじゃ）**。出水の太郎をはじめとして、異類異形の魔性の面々が、我も劣らじとよりこぞってきた。
惣大将・鯰の揺高はそれぞれに手配を定め、海手の方へも突浪・出水を伏せ勢とし、五か七かの雨、六つ八つの風を合図として、大事な雷鳴を前後に備え、鯰は自身、真っ先に進み出て、ぐらぐらと揺り出した。その……

## The Catfish Great Peace Chronicle: A Tale of Chaos
**A Playful Work by Ichū-Inshi (Hermit of the City) and Dōdō-Sanjin (Wandering Man of the Great Road)**
As the saying goes, "Even in peacetime, do not forget the possibility of upheaval." Here there was a creature known as Namazu Nura-Kurō, Lord of the Eight Depths of Hell, also called Yuritaka ("High Shaker") of the Deep Waters. Proud of his unrivaled strength, he repeatedly threatened houses, storehouses, halls and shrines, took human lives, and defied the Way of Heaven.
Long ago, the Great God of Kashima and the deity Futsunushi no Mikoto, bearing the imperial decree of the Goddess Amaterasu, had marched forth, captured him alive, buried him in an earthen prison, and pressed down upon him the vital cornerstone known as the Kaname-ishi (the Keystone), thus subduing him. And so the realm had flourished in an unshakeable age of peace.
Yet—was it the turning of time? Was it the will of Heaven?—in the early winter of the second year of Ansei (1855), the eight million gods had all rushed ahead of one another to depart for the province of Izumo, leaving the land unguarded. Seizing upon this as his golden opportunity, Yuritaka instantly stirred up his rebellious spirit, revealed his treacherous intentions, and sent out circular letters to summon his allies. The members of the conspiracy, who had long awaited this moment, came rushing in one after another:
**First to arrive: Tobihino Hayata Iyaki ("Swiftly Spreading Wildfire, House-Burner")**. Charging forth with the blaze at its peak — wearing armor adorned with fire-threatening designs, a helmet fitted with a close-pressed crest, bearing a fire-pillar standard, and mounted on a "Hizakurige"-style horse with flaming crimson thick tassels — he joined the fray with great ferocity.
**Second: Kaminari Gorō Otodaka ("Rumbling Thunder, High Sound")**. Wearing a helmet with two-horned crest, armor decorated with evening-shower designs, a sword shaped like a lightning bolt with a tiger-skin scabbard, he straddled a dark-cloud steed and came thundering in, striking a single mighty blow as he joined the assault.
**Third: The resident of Izu Province, Tsunami no Kanja ("The Wave Rider")**. Together with Demizu no Tarō ("Flooding Waters") and a host of monsters and demons of all manner of strange forms and appearances, each determined not to be outdone, they all swarmed in together.
The supreme commander, Namazu Yuritaka, assigned each one their position, deploying Tsunami and Demizu as hidden forces on the seaward side, and with five-or-seven rains and six-or-eight-o'clock winds as the signal, with great thunderclaps arrayed before and behind, the catfish himself advanced at the very forefront — and began to shake and rumble.
