Preface to the Illustrated Classic of Mountains and Seas
The Zuozhuan states: "In ancient times, when the Xia dynasty possessed virtue, distant regions sent illustrations of [exotic] creatures, and the nine pastoral lords contributed bronze, from which cauldrons were cast bearing images of those creatures. Each and every thing was depicted, and [full] preparation was thereby made [for the people to know them...]"
