決壊した中島土手は夜の八つ時（午前2時頃）と思われる頃で、皆が眠りにつく時刻であったので、人々は夢にも知らず、水音がするので「これは不思議だ」と皆それぞれが家の中の片付けをしているところへ、さっと水が増し、その勢いは雷の音よりもまだ激しく、「やれ」と言う間もなく軒よりも高く水が上がったので、家がふらふらと今にも倒れそうに見えるため、女子供は頻りに泣き叫び「助けて助けて」と大声で叫んでいるが、人のことより我が身が大事

ということで邪魔になるとて裸になって這って飛び出し、屋根から舟へ。汚れた娘や大変な目に遭った者が命からがら坂砂留まで舟を漕ぎつけて横付けすると、山手四ヶ村の家並みには、普段お客が来る時節には白粉をつけ、着物を重ね着して大きな帯を締めて優雅にゆったりと振る舞っている人が、湯巻き一つや褌ばかりという恥ずかしい姿も何とも思わず「ああ、お邪魔いたします」と立っているばかり。後は涙に暮れるばかりなので、涙を払う嵐の風よ。

The collapsed Nakajima embankment - it was around the eighth hour of the night (approximately 2 AM), the time when everyone would be sleeping, so people had no idea even in their dreams. Hearing the sound of water, thinking "this is strange," everyone was tidying up inside their homes when suddenly the water surged. Its force was even more violent than the sound of thunder, and before one could say "oh no," the water rose higher than the eaves, making the houses sway as if they would collapse at any moment. Women and children cried out frantically, shouting "help, help!" But everyone was more concerned about themselves than others.

Dirty girls and those in terrible straits rowed their boats desperately to Sakasunatomari and moored alongside. In the row of houses in the four mountain villages, people who in normal times when guests visit would powder their faces, wear layered kimonos and large obi sashes, conducting themselves elegantly and leisurely, now stood wearing only a single yukata or just a loincloth, feeling no shame, saying only "Oh, pardon the intrusion." Afterwards, there was nothing but weeping, so may the stormy wind blow away these tears.
