玉くしけの序
此書は。わか鈴￣ノ屋￣ノ大人の。ある国の君に
道の大かたを。いまの世のさとび言（ゴト）もて。
たれしの人もかやすくさとり得つべき
さまに書（カキ）て。奉られたりし書（フミ）なるを。下書（シタガキ）の。
名におふ匣の底にのこれるを。此里の
廣瀬【広瀬】が乞出（コヒイダ）して。木にゑるにつきて。おの
が一言をくはへてよとあるまゝに。書つけゝらく。

玉くしげの序
この書は、わが鈴屋の大人（本居宣長）が、ある国の君主に対して、道の大要を現代の分かりやすい言葉で、誰でも容易に理解できるように書いて献上された書物である。その下書きが、その名の通り箱の底に残っていたのを、この里の広瀬が請い出して、木版に彫って出版するにあたり、自分も一言加えるようにと言われるままに、書き記すことである。

Preface to Tamakushige
This book contains the essential principles of the Way (道), written by our great master of Suzuya (Motoori Norinaga) for a certain provincial lord. He explained these principles in contemporary, accessible language so that anyone could easily understand them, and presented this work to the lord. The draft manuscript, true to its name, remained at the bottom of a document box until Hirose of this village requested it and had it carved into woodblocks for publication. As I was asked to add a word of my own to this endeavor, I write this accordingly.
