(...continued from the previous page) It was only after conversing with him repeatedly that I came to realize: what one has heard does not approach what one has actually seen. Moreover, the reputation for which Ziliu is known does not yet approach the true substance of what Ziliu actually is.
I have long lamented that the study of human nature and principle (*xìngxué* / *xìnglǐxué*) has for a long time fallen into obscurity. Those who apply themselves to the learning of principle and human nature (*lǐxìng zhī xué*) have become rare. Even if there be one or two men of outstanding talent who resolutely pursue it, they will invariably be regarded as impractical and clumsy — and who, then, would follow and speak in praise of them? If, by good fortune, such a person, having explored and investigated, has already come to possess the means of grasping the source of things, and if through his intellectual understanding he is able to bring its outlines into expression — only then do people gather together to point at him, considering that "such a person knows what others cannot know, and explicates what others cannot explicate." His reputation emerges from this; his name rises from this. Alas! But who truly understands the reasons that brought him to this point? Is it not perhaps the case that what lies fundamentally *in him* is entirely distinct from what lies *in this* (i.e., in the world's recognition of him)?
Ziliu is in truth a man of the learning of principle and human nature (*lǐxìng*). He is not merely a person who understands Heavenly learning (*tiānxué*) and is skilled at astronomical observation (*cèyàn*). In truth, his investigation is penetrating and his intellectual understanding is outstanding. It is not merely a matter of his reputation having emerged and his name having risen.
Ziliu said to me: "In broad terms, numbers (*shù*) never leave principle (*lǐ*) behind; vessels/instruments (*qì*) never leave the Way (*dào*) behind." At first I was astonished; presently I was filled with admiration. It is evident that he has exhausted the efforts of the investigation of things and the extension of knowledge (*gé zhì*), employing them as an aid to making the will sincere and rectifying the mind (*chéng zhèng*). In everything — from the exegesis of the Way (*dào quánshì*) and the interpretation of canonical texts, to the agreements and differences between Zhu (Xi) and Lu (Jiuyuan / Xiangshan) — there is none in which he has not grasped the essential import. It is then only fitting that, regarding the principle that "Heaven (*qián*) is the father and Earth (*kūn*) is the mother," he knows its truth and expounds upon it exhaustively.
Nevertheless, even though what I myself have seen far surpasses what I had heard to such a degree, what other people have heard of him has still not reached what I have seen. For this reason, the extent to which people know Ziliu, and the extent to which Ziliu is known among people, still does not go beyond the sphere of "being versed in Heavenly learning and skilled at astronomical observation." Is it not then entirely inevitable that the *Tianjing Huowen* (天經或問) should be published (*kè*)? How could such publication be forestalled?
Ah, alas! If what Ziliu seeks is such as this, and yet what people know of Ziliu is such as that, then the tastes and values (*hàoshàng*) of human society are greatly at odds with the intentions (*yòngxīn*) of Ziliu. Had Ziliu not had me personally to question and probe into the reasons of his learning, Ziliu would ultimately have become known merely as "a man of one achievement" (*yīdé zhī shì*). Who would have known that his thoroughness of investigation, his subtlety of intellectual understanding, greatly exceeds the world's reputation for him...
