...and birds and beasts are born there. Things are born in the space between Heaven and Earth: those with scales, those with shells, those with wings who fly, those with legs who run, those bare-skinned who move and breathe, those with roots, those with stems, those that sprout like fungi, those that arise from moisture — all extraordinarily numerous and diverse. Among all things, only humans are the spiritual lords of the ten thousand things. From one's nature and destiny, morality and virtue, conduct and bearing, to the roundness of the head and the flatness of the feet, the ears, eyes, nose, and mouth — all of these are manifestations of the wondrous workings of Principle and Vital Force that make things as they are. Master Liu (Liu Kanggong) said: "The people receive the mean (balanced essence) of Heaven and Earth, and from this they are born — this is what is called 'destiny (ming).' Therefore, there are rules of action, propriety, righteousness, and dignified bearing by which destiny is established. Those who are capable nurture this and thereby attain blessings; those who are incapable ruin it and thereby invite calamity." Is this not precisely what is meant by Heaven having a presiding Principle and having a manifest Vital Force? In ancient times, when Baoxi (Fuxi) ruled over the world as king, he looked upward and observed the symbols in Heaven, and looked downward and observed the patterns in the Earth. He observed the markings of birds and beasts and the suitability of the land, taking what was near from the human body and what was far from the myriad things. It was thus that he first created the Eight Trigrams, in order to penetrate the virtue of the divine and luminous, and to categorize the conditions of the ten thousand things. Viewed in this light, there is nothing that precedes the Book of Changes (Yi) when it comes to explaining Heaven. Throughout successive generations, those who were learned in astronomy...
