**合刻天経或問・天学名目鈔 序**
天とは、理と気とのみである。主宰するものとしてこれを「理」と言い、形や象（かたち）を持つものとしてこれを「気」と言う。それゆえ、古今において天を論じる者には、理を指して語る者もあれば、気を指して語る者もあり、その説は一つではない。しかしながら、天地（両儀）が初めて分かれて以来、天があれば必ず地がこれに対となって存在する。それゆえ、天は上に位置して、日・月・星・辰がそこに懸かり、寒暑・風雨がそこを行き来する。地は下に位置して、山川・丘陵がそこに載り、草木が〔以下次頁に続く〕

**Preface to the Combined Edition of "Tenkei Wakumon" and "Tengaku Maimoku Shō"**
Heaven consists of nothing more than Principle (ri) and Vital Force (ki). When referred to as that which governs and presides, it is called "Principle"; when referred to in terms of form and appearance, it is called "Vital Force." Therefore, among those who have discussed Heaven throughout the ages, some have spoken of it in terms of Principle, while others have spoken of it in terms of Vital Force, and their explanations are not uniform. Nevertheless, since the Two Forms (Heaven and Earth) first separated and came into being, whenever there is Heaven, there must necessarily be Earth to pair with it. Thus, Heaven is positioned above, where the sun, moon, stars, and constellations hang, and where cold, heat, wind, and rain move. Earth is positioned below, where mountains, rivers, hills, and ridges rest, and where plants and trees [continued on the next page]
