現代語訳
いわゆる「父がこれを作り、子がこれを述べる」というものである。ある日、侍医・法眼の長尾分哲が、『天経或問』と『天学名目鈔』の二書を袖に携えてきて、告げて言った。「この二書はすでに公朝（幕府・朝廷）に達しており、合わせて版木に刻み、天下の人々とともに宝としたいと思います。どうかこれに序文をお書きください。」と。私は不才であり、どうしてその求めに応えられましょうか。しかしながら、この書を読む者が、天の道と己の性（本性）が同じく一つの根源から出ていることを知り、天を敬い、性を尊ぶ心が少しも怠ることのないようにさせるならば、これは世の教えに大いに補いとなる書である。私は西川氏の家世の美徳を称えて、これを書き記して贈るものである。

This is what is meant by the saying, "The father creates it, and the son carries it on." One day, the attending physician of the rank of Hōgen, Nagao Buntetsu, came carrying in his sleeve the two works *Tenkei Wakumon* (Questions and Answers on Celestial Principles) and *Tengaku Maimokushō* (Compendium of Terms in Celestial Learning), and said: "These two books have already been presented to the court and government. I wish to combine them and engrave them on woodblocks, so that they may be treasured together with all under Heaven. I humbly request that you write a preface for them." I am a person of little talent — how could I possibly be equal to such a request? Nevertheless, if those who read this book come to know that the Way of Heaven and one's own innate nature both emerge from the same single source, and if it causes their hearts of reverence for Heaven and respect for their nature never to slacken even slightly, then this is a book that greatly contributes to the moral instruction of the world. I admire the accumulated virtue of the Nishikawa family across generations, and thus write this and present it as a gift.
