現代語訳
いわゆる「父これを作り、子これを述ぶ」というものである。ある日、侍医・法眼の長尾分哲が、『天経或問』と『天学名目鈔』を袖に携えてきて、告げていわく、「この二書はすでに公朝（幕府・朝廷）に達しており、合わせて版木に刻んで、天下とともにこれを宝としたいと思う。どうかこれに序文を書いていただきたい。」と。わたくしは不敏（才識が浅い）ゆえ、どうしてその求めに応じることができようか。しかしながら、この書を読む者が、天道と自己の本性とが同じく一つの根源から出ていることを知り、天を敬い、本性を尊ぶ心を少しも怠らせないようにするならば、すなわち世の教えに大いに補いとなる書である。わたくしは西川氏の家世（家代々）の美（すぐれた業績・徳行）を嘉（よみ）して、書してもってこれを贈る。

This is what is meant by the saying: "The father created it, and the son has transmitted it." One day, the Physician-in-Attendance of the rank of *Hōgen*, Nagao Buntetsu, came carrying in his sleeve both the *Tenkei Wakumon* (Queries on the Celestial Classics) and the *Tengaku Meimoku-shō* (A Digest of Astronomical Terminology), and informed me, saying: "These two books have already been presented to the authorities (*kōchō*), and I wish to combine them and have them engraved on woodblocks, so that they may be treasured together with all under Heaven. I humbly request that you write a preface for them." I am a man of little talent — how could I possibly be worthy of such a request? Nevertheless, if those who read this book come to know that the Way of Heaven and one's own nature both issue from the same single source, and if this causes their hearts of reverence for Heaven and respect for their own nature never to slacken in the slightest, then this is indeed a book of great benefit to the moral instruction of the world. Cherishing the accumulated excellence of the Nishikawa family across the generations, I set down these words and present them as a gift.
