叙
大都（おほよそ）の碩儒（せきじゆ）名医（めいゐ）温泉（おんせん）の理（り）を説（と）き能（のう）を挙給（あげたまふ）
ふ理（り）は和漢（わかん）共￣ニ同しといへども其｜能（のう）各（をの〳〵）異（こと）なり其
理は病（やまひ）に益（ゑき）なければ極（きわ）めずとも猶（なを）有（ある）べし其

### 七湯栞 序
おおよそ、碩学の儒者や名高い医者たちが温泉の理（道理・原理）を説き、その効能を挙げておられるが、その理（原理）は日本も中国も同じであっても、それぞれの温泉の効能は各々異なるものである。その原理については、病気に益するものでなければ究めなくてもなお構わないであろう。しかし、その効能については、医療に携わる者であれば知らないわけにはいかない。私はここにこのことを心に留めるべき事柄として、文化八年（1811年）、友人の弄花とともに、卯の花の雪（初夏の白い卯の花）に袖を打ち払いながら、杖を西南へと引きずるように歩き出して……

In general, eminent Confucian scholars and renowned physicians have explained the principles of hot springs and enumerated their benefits. While these underlying principles are the same in both Japan and China, the specific efficacies of each spring differ from one another. As for the principles themselves, even if one does not fully master them, this may still be permissible, so long as they are not harmful to the sick. However, as for the efficacies, those who practice medicine cannot afford to be ignorant of them.
