現代語訳
玉くしげ（くし箱）のように秘めやかな箱根の温泉を探り求めた時、夏の初めのことであった。山々の緑は美しく麗しく、目を大いに楽しませ、早川の水は底まで清らかに流れて、心の塵を洗い流してくれるほどであった。嘆かわしいことは、まるで恨んでいるかのように腸を断つほどの思いがすることだ。病を治さずして、かえって病を悪化させ、我が身を大切にすることの根本を忘れて、ただ心を慰めることに惑わされているのではないか。ここにおいて、にわかに憤りを発し、七湯の効験、病への応変（症状に応じた対処）、入浴後の禁忌、さらに地形の広狭、名所旧跡、道程など様々なことを記して、後の人々がここを訪れる際の手引きとしようとするものである。その仕事がついに完成し、私に序文を求めてきた。さらに詳しいことは巻を開いてお知りになるがよい。

自序
それ、陽とは火の気のことである。金属や石、あるいは樹木を叩いたり打ったりすれば、たちまちのうちに火の出ない所はない。これによって考えると、どうして土の中に陽気が積もって火を生ずることが

When I set out to explore the hidden hot springs of Hakone — like treasures concealed in a jeweled comb box — it was the beginning of summer. The green of the mountains was beautifully resplendent, bringing great delight to the eyes, and the waters of the Hayakawa River flowed clear to their very depths, washing away the dust of worldly cares from one's heart. What is truly lamentable is a feeling so acute it seems to cut through one's very bowels, as though filled with resentment. Is it not a kind of delusion — failing to cure one's illness and instead making it worse, forgetting the very foundation of caring for one's own body, and being led astray by the mere comfort of the mind? It is here that I was suddenly roused to indignation, and resolved to record the therapeutic effects of the Seven Hot Springs, how they respond to various illnesses, the prohibitions to observe after bathing, as well as the breadth and layout of the terrain, famous places and historic sites, distances of travel, and various other matters — so that this work might serve as a guide for those who visit here in the future.
