Item: Regarding the matter of memorial services (*hōji*): Same as the above.
Item: Regarding the matter of monetary donations to temples and shrines (*hōka*): Same as the above.
The supplementary articles noted above had caused practical difficulties since the previous directive was issued, and special exemptions (*goyōsha*) were accordingly granted one by one. Therefore, once again, these are hereby communicated for the awareness of all concerned. As for the remaining matters, all persons are to observe the provisions of the Year of the Dog regulations, without envying the ways of others, and to uphold austerity with due diligence. Furthermore, group administrators (*kumi-shihai*) and retainers alike, down to the lowest levels, are to enforce these matters strictly in accordance with the above. That is all.
Last day of the 3rd month The Inspectors (*metsuke*)
○ On this occasion, by means of a written directive, the austerity measures of the Year of the Dog have once again been issued. As there have been certain matters among the said articles for which exemptions were previously granted, please ensure that — as specified in the attached document — these are henceforth strictly observed. Please take note of this. That is all.
Last day of the 3rd month To all concerned The Inspectors
○ Lord Matsudaira Kaga-no-kami is scheduled to pass through this domain in the near future. As this falls during the period when music and entertainment are suspended *[marginal note: this is during the mourning period (chūin) for Lord Yūtokuin]*, all persons — men and women alike — are to refrain entirely from going out to view the procession. Please take note of this and ensure it is strictly communicated to those below you. That is all.

Oral Communication
○ Regarding the matter of residential construction at the residences of domain retainers in connection with the austerity measures — this has been communicated as directed this past spring. However, it has since come to our attention that some persons have taken down the front-facing walls and replaced them with green bamboo fencing. Henceforth, even for minor matters involving the removal of fencing or walls, persons must report to the Inspectors and receive instructions before proceeding. Please take note of this. That is all.

**Item: Hōreki 2, Year of the Monkey (1752)**
○ As has previously been directed: since the Shogun is currently residing in Edo (*gojōfu*), the foremost matter is that the domain's interior must be kept especially peaceful and orderly. In light of this, it goes without saying that younger members of the domain retinue should refrain from frequenting places of amusement and attending banquets; furthermore, as in former times, visits to places of public entertainment — and in particular, attending kabuki theater performances from which they have been expelled — should be avoided with due circumspection. Moreover, it is needless to say that the conduct of one's household must be beyond reproach; all persons are to observe austerity in all things and maintain their conduct with unceasing care. This has been communicated to all by the senior elders (*karō*). Please take heed. That is all.
3rd day of the 3rd month [*sic*: 5th day] To all concerned — hereafter to group [administrators] The Inspectors
Memorandum of Oral Communication
○ In recent years it has come to our attention that young people among the lower ranks of the domain retinue have, under the name of the Fifth Month iris celebration, been assaulting women passing on the road and causing them considerable harm. Furthermore, it has similarly come to our attention that stones and the like have been thrown at places where wedding ceremonies are being conducted. It appears that these acts involve not only the children themselves as ringleaders, but also retainers joining in and participating. Therefore, please ensure that such conduct is absolutely prohibited, and strictly communicate this to the children and retainers of all persons concerned. That is all.
